It’s been a fantastic year for the Yorkshire food scene. We should know, we ate our way through the region, and then some, throughout the course of 2023. One thing we noticed throughout that time? An absolute boom in culinary creativity – which it just so happens, the team at the Michelin Guide have noticed, too, and reflected in tonight’s Michelin ceremony in Manchester for 2024.
Awarding a brand new restaurant a shiny new star, Hovingham’s Mýse, which opened just last June, is the newest restaurant to be awarded the accolade – and after trying the restaurant ourselves late last summer, we can certainly see why.

The village restaurant serves a tasting menu only, sourcing all of their ingredients locally through small-scale farmers and producers – putting a spotlight on the produce that’s available there and then. Additionally, the team at Mýse is incredibly passionate about reflecting Yorkshire throughout each and every dish, be it a nod to the classic Yorkshire pudding or the use of freshly caught seafood from our own waters.
Every part of the guest’s journey at Mýse is considered. From welcome drinks in the snug area and appetisers by the fire, to paired wine (or stunningly crafted soft drinks) served with each course and an expert commentary with every dish. It’s an experience to be savoured, with each and every bite.

Here’s what the experts at the Michelin Guide had to say: “In a pretty little village on the edge of the North York Moors lies this former pub with stripped-back décor – expect flagstone floors, whitewashed beams and exposed stone walls.
“The tasting menu features prime produce enhanced by a range of techniques, both traditional and modern, as with the subtle, well-judged use of pickling and preserving. A top wine list and non-alcoholic pairings ensure the food isn’t the only highlight, while cosy, simply decorated bedrooms complete the picture.”
Mýse joins Michelin veterans The Star Inn at Harome and The Angel in Hetton, and marks 7 stars for the region – after Michael O’Hare of The Man Behind The Curtain handed his back in a bid to create a new dining experience and brand.
