A New Restaurant Championing ‘Yorkshire Cooking’ Is Coming To The North York Moors

If you’ve ever driven through Hovingham before, you’ll know already that despite having little there (bar the conveniences for the locals), there’s something about the picturebook village that makes you want to stop by and stay a while. The village’s uniformed brick that’s pleasing to the eye, its mysterious peacefulness – and now, it’s new, high-end restaurant run by the former owners of York’s Le Cochon Aveugle.

Opening this June in the beautiful North York Moors village, Mýse (pronounced Meez), promises to bring traditional Yorkshire cooking to the village, putting a spotlight on the fantastic local produce Yorkshire has to offer.

Set within a former pub, the newly renovated 19th-century inn will not only be home to the restaurant, but a cocktail snug and rooms upstairs, where guests will be able to enjoy a relaxing overnight stay later this year. Each room will provide stunning views of the surrounding North York Moors, alongside Hovingham Hall which sits behind the restaurant.

Chef Joshua Overington and wife Victoria hope the new project will bring their restaurant dreams to life, with a bigger space allowing them to get more creative with their offering. The duo found success in York with both Le Cochon Aveugle and Cave du Cochon – both of which closed at the end of last year ahead of the couple’s new adventure.

From the Overington’s new venture, guests can expect fine tasting menus served in the evenings, alongside shorter lunch menus available on weekends. Dishes teased so far (which draw on the area’s rich history) include hand-dived Orkney scallop baked in its shell with sea urchin, day boat red mullet cooked over juniper with a sauce made from its livers, alongside Swaledale lamb saddle and ‘Savoury Ducks’ – a playful take on faggots.

Drinks-wise, expect Yorkshire beers, French and English wines (nodding to the pair’s time spent in France), and local gins.

Joshua says, “Mýse is an opportunity for us to finally realise our restaurant dream. We loved our time at Le Cochon Aveugle and think back on it fondly, but outgrew the space.

“This is our chance to create something more ambitious and a reflection on our incredible Yorkshire surroundings. I grew up here and it has been home to Victoria for ten years, so we wanted to create a welcoming, homely spot, each dish a nod to dinners that my Yorkshire grandmother would cook for me, but elevated and
refined.”

Reservations are open now, and you can find out more here. Restaurant Mýse will be located at Main Street, Hovingham, YO62 4LF.
