Join the NYMR in commemorating a remarkable milestone at the 50th Anniversary Steam Gala. It started yesterday from Thursday, September 21, and runs to Sunday, September 24, 2023.
Celebrating a half-century of passenger service at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR), this gala promises an extraordinary experience, featuring a splendid array of steam locomotives gracing the tracks. Over this fantastic four-day event, immerse yourself in the charm of rail travel with up to 12 locomotives in full steam.
Ride behind NYMR guest locomotives and home fleet engines across the four days with services calling at Pickering, Levisham, Newtondale Halt (by request), Goathland, Grosmont, and Whitby stations.

Adding to the allure is the Great Central Railway and David Clarke Railway Trust’s BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 No. 92214. Additionally, they have No. 75069, brought by the Severn Valley Railway & The 75069 Fund, and the Caledonian Railway 2P No. 55189 courtesy of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society.

Throughout this jubilant weekend, various stations along the line will host captivating events. Goathland Station will enchant you with its Annual Steam Gala Beer Festival, offering a rotating selection of real ales from local breweries.
On Saturday evening, indulge in live music by Time is Tight at Goathland Station from 19:30 to 22:30. Additionally, station tea rooms and Levisham Tea Hut will be open to cater to your refreshment needs.

Delight in a diverse array of attractions, including exhibitions by the Scarborough and District Railway Modellers at the Learning Centre on Platform 2 of Pickering Station.
The models displayed in the popular 00 and N gauge scales offer a glimpse into the evolving world of hobbyist rail modeling. Trade stalls at Pickering Station, such as DPP Model Railways and Model Market, offer a treasure trove for enthusiasts seeking second-hand and pre-loved railway items, and those passionate about DCC and DCC Sound.
Fundraising Stalls from esteemed organisations like The Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust, Lambton Locomotives Trust (LLC), Yorkshire Wolds Railway, and BR Class 8 Steam Locomotive Trust will also grace Pickering Station.
The Dame Vera Lynn Fundraising Group will be present at the Learning Centre on Platform 2 at Pickering Station, showcasing progress on locomotive overhauls and ways to support these efforts. Also, witness a unique feature: the locomotive tender at Pickering Station Carriage & Wagon apron alongside the new location for The Friendly Miniature Railway, allowing you to enjoy a ride for a nominal fee.
Levisham Station will host a captivating display of Vintage Stationary Agricultural Engines, offering a glimpse into the past. For model railway enthusiasts, the Shed Shop at Grosmont (accessible via the foot tunnel) presents an exciting range of Hornby, Bachmann, and Dapol model railway items, some at enticing prices below RRP, perfect for enhancing your model railway layout. The shop will be open each day from 1000 to 1700, providing ample opportunities to browse and purchase these miniature wonders.
