After a long and frustrating 300-day closure, one of the Peak District’s cherished landmarks is finally set to reopen. The Dovedale Stepping Stones, make up part of the scenic Thorpe Cloud Walk near Ilam and is a firm favourite for hikers and families to have a go.
Back in October, the stepping stones suffered significant damage during the devastating floods caused by Storm Babet. Several of the stones were damaged by debris carried by the floodwaters, and the National Trust, which manages the land, deemed them unsafe for public use.
Although technically located in Derbyshire, we like to consider it part of the Peak District as it spans three counties. The Dovedale stepping stones are a must-visit for walkers. From the car park, cross a wooden bridge to reach the River Dove. Look up, and you’ll spot Thorpe Cloud towering at 287 metres.
Follow the River Dove to the renowned stepping stones, which lead to the ascent of Thorpe Cloud. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Dovedale. And after nearly a year of waiting,
Speaking about the stepping stones, a National Trust spokesperson said: “Dovedale is a National Nature Reserve where the local community and visitors alike can enjoy the beautiful scenery and the great outdoors.
“The stepping stones at Dovedale have been successfully repaired by Derbyshire County Council, who are responsible for this public right of way. It’s great to see that the stones have been reinstated and that they are now open again so that walkers can again explore the incredible surrounding landscape.”
