Since the road known otherwise as the A57, in 1821 dozens of people have been killed or injured. It is regularly closed over winter if the conditions get too bad. On average the road closes for 70 days of the year due to hazardous conditions caused by heavy snow and landslides.

The road is dangerous due to its blind summits and difficult bends – so much so that it has been included in a list of the world’s most dangerous roads.

The research was carried out by car rental site StressFreeCarRental.com, which has described the road as a “hotspot for fatal accidents”.
