One of the UK’s northern roads that connect Sheffield with Manchester has been featured in the top 10 most dangerous roads on the planet.
Yorkshire has some fantastic roads for a road trip – and although this road isn’t completely in Yorkshire it connects two major Northern cities.
Snakes Pass, which connects Sheffield to Manchester, has been named seventh in the list which features some crazy routes such as Skippers Canyon Road in New Zealand and the treacherous Fairy Meadows in Pakistan.
Since the road known otherwise as the A57, in 1821 dozens of people have been killed or injured. It is regularly closed over winter if the conditions get too bad. On average the road closes for 70 days of the year due to hazardous conditions caused by heavy snow and landslides.
The road is dangerous due to its blind summits and difficult bends – so much so that it has been included in a list of the world’s most dangerous roads.
The research was carried out by car rental site StressFreeCarRental.com, which has described the road as a “hotspot for fatal accidents”.
The list has been compiled as a way of warning motorists with a spokesperson said: “Drivers are urged to proceed with extreme caution while attempting to tackle any of the most dangerous roads in the world.
“Whether someone is an exceptionally experienced driver or overconfident, is it not worth taking any chances. Motorists should always drive with caution and follow extra safety measures such as slowing down and being extra observant when navigating these roads.
“But really you should avoid these dangerous roads altogether. One wrong move on these roads will end in almost certain death for drivers.”
The road wasn’t the only UK entry on the list, Bealach-na-ba road in Scotland also featured in 9th position
