What Is The North Water About?
Set in the late 19th century, the five-hour-long mini-series has a star-studded cast and tells the story based on the acclaimed novel by Ian McGuire, who was born in Hull. The five-part series tells the story of a disgraced ex-army surgeon, Patrick Summer, who signs up as the ship doctor for an expedition to the Arctic for whaling purposes. He has to deal with the rough elements, violent crewmates – all while discovering the true reason for the dangerous expedition.
The series combines psychological tension with the brutal reality of life aboard a 19th-century whaling ship, making for an intense and often gripping watch. If you’re a fan of dark dramas, survival stories and historical series with a gritty edge, The North Water could be right up your street.
The Arctic setting provides a dramatic backdrop, while the increasingly tense storyline keeps you guessing about what is really happening aboard the ship. It’s certainly not a light-hearted watch, but with a brilliant cast, stunning scenery and an intense story, this five-part series makes for a gripping binge-watch.
