The Stunning Yorkshire Coast Walk With Breathtaking Sea Views

There are some incredible walks along the Yorkshire coast. Very few places offer a mixture of tranquillity, adventure, dramatic landscapes, and historical interest like those found in this incredibly beautiful part of the world. One of the best walks you can experience on the coast is the Whitby to Robin Hood’s Bay walk, which takes you through two of the most picturesque towns in Yorkshire.

Starting at the Famous Gothic Town – Whitby

This approximately 7-mile coastal route follows the Cleveland Way national trail and takes around three to four hours to complete. It is not a particularly technical walk, and the route is very easy to follow. However, the terrain is uneven in places, with steep inclines and declines, so take walking boots.

The walk does start with a bit of a challenge, climbing the famous 199 steps to the dramatic ruins of Whitby Abbey. The route is signposted, so you won’t miss it.  As you walk along the coast, you’ll come across natural and historical wonders that make this adventure extra special. As you start the walk, you’ll get an incredible view of Whitby and its coastline. Then, as you make your way along the coast, you’ll walk past Whitby High Lighthouse and Foghorn Station.

One stop you’ll make is at Saltwick Bay, famous for its Jurassic cliffs and shoreline dating back 180 million years. As a result, it is a brilliant place for fossil hunting. If you are there when it’s a low tide, you will be able to see the shipwreck of the Admiral Von Tromp, which ran aground in 1976. On the route, you’ll also pass beautiful coastal places like Rain Dale and Oakham.

Celebrating Your Epic Walk at Robin Hood’s Bay

The walk ends in the picture-perfect fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay. As you stroll around the village, you’ll find historic cobbled streets, beach walks, museums, tearooms serving up delicious tea, cakes, sandwiches, and much more.

We’re sure that after such an epic walk, you’ll be in the mood for a refreshing pint. We highly recommend The Bay Hotel, a classic seafront pub and the perfect place to celebrate the end of your journey. They offer a great selection of ales, a menu full of traditional pub classics, stunning views of the bay, and direct access to the beach.

When you’ve explored Robin Hood’s Bay and are ready to go back to Whitby, you have a few options. If you’ve still got life in your legs and are up for a challenge, you can go back the way you came and experience this stunning walk again. Alternatively, if you have run out of juice, taxis are available from Robin Hood’s Bay, or you can take a scenic bus ride back.

So, lace up your walking boots and get ready to take on the Whitby to Robin Hood’s Bay walk. It is the perfect way to experience the beauty of the Yorkshire coast in all its glory.
