Now here at The Yorkshireman, we have quite the habit of staying exclusively in Yorkshire for our weekends away, so it had to be something pretty spectacular to coax us into crossing the county border.
This is where we introduce you to The Ro Hotel, Windermere… The lucky spot that had us saying “au revoir!” to God’s Own Country for a temporary break away from our beloved home region.

Located in the bustling town of Bowness-on-Windermere – a popular tourist hotspot within the Lake District – The Ro Hotel perfectly encompasses what the town is best known for: its stunning views.
Situated just a few streets back from the famous Lake Windermere, it’s a retreat perfect for those on the hunt for casual comfort – boasting laidback luxury in an understated manner.
I’m talking wonderfully firm mattresses (that I actually took a photo of to buy for our house), soft down pillows that you simply sink into, and beautiful, fresh, modern decor that says “we’re a 4-star hotel” without being too shouty about it. But for us, the all-important decider for how we felt about the hotel was: does the dog like it? Spoiler: she did.

We jest, of course, but the hotel’s dog-friendly ethos certainly helped win it a few brownie points with Mr and Mrs Yorkshireman.
Ideally located between not only the town centre (which is only a two-minute walk away from the hotel) and scenic walking routes such as the Brant Fell viewpoint and Bowness Bay, guests at The Ro Hotel can enjoy the best of Bowness right in their laps.
From boating trips on the lake to watersports and cosy boozers, there’s certainly plenty to do, but The Ro Hotel provides enough for those who fancy kicking back just metres away from their beds, too.
At the stylish bar – which is kitted out with velvets, statement lighting and ambient music – guests can wind down with a huge array of delicious (and picture-perfect) cocktails, alongside wines, local beers and tons of spirits, before sneaking off next door to the cherry-blossom-adorned Lacu restaurant.
There, guests can expect filling British cuisine, including sausages sourced in Cumbria, locally-made bread and flavourful British veggies. Think classics such as whopping 10oz portions of rib-eye steak (our personal order), Cumbrian lamb, and slow-cooked pork belly.
The Ro Hotel can be found on Helm Road, Bowness-on-Windermere, and rooms start at £125 per night. Find out more and book here.
