We all know the Michelin Guide for its star ratings for food places across the world, but the guide has now introduced its luxury hotel stay guide naming the most outstanding accommodation across the UK and Ireland. From stately homes to boutique hotels and townhouses the new Michelin ‘key’ has recommended 5,000 remarkable hotels across the world following visits from guide inspectors. And, one Yorkshire hotel has been named.
Much like the stats, you can get three, two or one ket grade which are dictated through a range of criteria. The five criteria are excellence in architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value in relation to price and a significant contribution to the neighbourhood or setting.

One key reflects a ‘very special stay’, two an ‘exceptional stay’ and three an ‘extraordinary stay’. In the UK and Ireland, 14 hotels were awarded three keys, 37 two keys and 72 one key in the Michelin hotel guide.
Grantley Hall in Ripon. North Yorkshire received two keys. Posting to social media the wrote: “We are thrilled to announce that Grantley Hall has been awarded a prestigious Two Key Distinction in the inaugural @michelinguide Key listing, celebrating the world’s most exceptional hotels.
“As one of three in the entire North of England to receive this award, we are immensely proud to be recognised for our excellence in design, architecture, service and unique character. This achievement is a testament to our team’s dedication to providing an unparalleled experience for our guests.”

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guides, said: “For our latest European release, we are absolutely thrilled to present to world travellers our very first Michelin key selection for Great Britain and Ireland.
“Featuring no fewer than 123 outstanding hotels, this selection is an invitation to explore the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, visit their historically rich cities, relax in their charming countryside and scenic landscapes, and enjoy, for a few nights, a timeless lifestyle in century-old castles and manor houses.
“From boutique hotels or flagship luxury properties located in eclectic London to country houses nestled in dramatic Irish countryside; from stunning Scottish manor houses to tranquil Welsh retreats: every hotel awarded one, two or three Michelin keys is a gem sculpted by talented professionals.”
