We’ve found one of the tastiest spots inside Sheffield’s original food hall, Cutlery Works – named after its former life as a cutlery factory – and it’s serving up some seriously good birria. Located in the Steel City’s coolest neighbourhood, Fuego 1987 is more than enough reason to pay a visit this weekend.
Cutlery Works spans a large, open-plan space with over a dozen independent food vendors spread across two floors, alongside plenty of communal seating. It’s a brilliant place to graze your way around Sheffield’s food scene – especially if you’re on the hunt for the viral birria ramen.
Among the line-up are Baity, championing authentic Palestinian flavours inspired by family recipes; House of Habesha, serving rich Eritrean and Ethiopian stews with injera and communal-style dining; and, of course, Fuego 1987 – the home of that much-talked-about birria ramen.

Fuego specialises in all things birria and is quickly building a reputation for serving some of the best tacos in the city. We ordered the birria tacos and the birria ramen – two specials that sit alongside a menu of tacos, nachos, loaded fries and more.
The birria noodles were rich, spicy and definitely not for the faint-hearted, packed with heat and deep, savoury flavour. The portion was generous too, making it perfect for sharing alongside a plate of tacos, which were easily some of the best we’ve had in Yorkshire.
The birria gravy had incredible depth, making it the ultimate dunk for the tender, cheesy beef filling. Just look at that dip.

If it’s proper tacos in Sheffield you’re after – or a bit of birria done right – this is the spot.
