This Yorkshire Fishing Village Has Been Named In The Top 20 Hidden Gems In Europe

There aren’t many ‘hidden gems’ in Yorkshire that the locals don’t know about, but that doesn’t stop them from being seen that way to other parts of the country – and even the world. Staithes, the quaint fishing village along the Yorkshire Coast, has been featured in a list of Europe’s most beautiful hidden gems.

Just to add the cherry on top of the list, Britain doesn’t feature heavily, so the fact that this tiny fishing village made the cut is a huge deal. The list was curated by Europe’s Best Destinations, a popular travel website.

The seaside village just made it into the top 20, coming in 18th place for Europe’s most beautiful hidden destinations – which is a great accolade for the sleepy village. Popular with hikers and holidaymakers, Staithes is great for families, couples, or just a solo trip out.

And the website noted that it was a great spot for ‘fossil hunting’ or ‘just a foodie getaway in England’. But it’s not just for fossil hunters; with its red-roofed cottages and quaint cobbled streets, it makes for the perfect escape. You can stay in a quaint B&B overlooking the harbour for just £30 a night – making it a perfect budget holiday destination.

It’s located along the Cleveland Way, a stunning hiking trail, so if you’re a keen hiker or just fancy a stroll, you can pick up on that part of the trail and enjoy some of the Yorkshire Coast’s finest views. Head back into the town afterwards and explore some of its great pubs, including the popular Cod & Lobster that sits right on the harbour.

Just down the road on either side of Staithes are Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Whitby, two of the most popular seaside towns in England. So, you won’t be stuck for things to do when visiting this hidden gem.

It was a small Spanish town of Villajoyosa that took the top spot in the list. You can check out the most beautiful hidden gems of Europe list here
