Yorkshire is home to some of the best market towns that the country has to offer. Market towns are full of character and a hub of community for the surrounding area. One Yorkshire town in particular has been selected as one of the most quintessential in England (which is always nice to hear.)

Independent Cottages has compiled a list of England’s most “quintessential” market towns and Beverley in East Riding of Yorkshire has featured in 4th place. A range of factors were taken into consideration, including age, rating of market on Google, the number of retail and wholesale independent businesses, museums and historic buildings.

The website described them saying: “At the very heart of the country’s rural beauty, is its market towns. These ‘quintessentially English’ settlements embody community spirit, rich heritage, and age-long traditions. Whether people explore the English countryside during a weekend getaway or a short day out, these market towns have something special to offer.”

The ‘thriving’ East Yorkshire market town stands out due to ‘its breathtaking medieval architecture and vibrant cultural scene. It has taken one of the top spots due to it embodying ‘the vision of an English market town, with cobbled streets, buildings from several historic eras, and a thriving independent scene’.

Some of Beverley’s most iconic landmarks include the majestic Beverley Minster, Beverley’s streets lined with beautiful Georgian townhouses, where you’ll find top restaurants, beautiful boutiques and gift stores. Also Beverley Westwood pasture, the gateway to the market town, perfect for long dog walks, summer picnics and wholesome family outings.
