Is there anything better than enjoying a fine, traditional Sunday roast on a crisp, cool autumn day? Well, we certainly can’t think of anything. Just thinking about tender, juicy meat, warm gravy, crispy roasties, and lots of veggies has already got our mouths watering. So, we decided to pick out three of our favourite Yorkshire pubs for the perfect Sunday roast. Our travels take us to the coast, the Dales, and a famous literary village.
1. Fylingdale Inn – Fylingthorpe
Our first stop takes us to the wonderful Yorkshire Coast. The Fylingdale Inn is entering a new era after completing a modern revamp. With Chef George Husband at the helm, they are offering stunning decor, a host of great ales, and some of the best food you’ll find for miles around.
Just a stone’s throw from Robin Hood’s Bay, you can enjoy a Sunday roast with all the trimmings. However, before tucking into the roast, make sure you sample a few of their pub snacks. They are divine. Some of our favourites include Whitby crab on toast, lamb and red pepper skewers, and ham hock croquettes with beer mustard.
Then there’s the roast! Beautifully cooked meats with mixed local vegetables, crispy roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, and lashings of gravy. If you choose the beef, you get a surprise: hidden beef crackling that helps soak up the gravy and flavours. Make sure you leave room for dessert though, particularly the bread and butter pudding! Yum!
If you are heading out to the coast this autumn and winter, call in at the Fylingdale Inn for a hearty roast and a friendly Yorkshire welcome.
You can find it at Thorpe Lane, Fylingthorpe, Whitby YO22 4TH.
2. The Angel at Hetton – Hetton
Our next stop is in the Yorkshire Dales. The Angel, located in the picturesque village of Hetton, is widely regarded as the original Yorkshire Dales gastropub. It is headed by Michelin-starred chef Michael Wignall and has won multiple awards, including The Times North and Northeast Hotel of the Year 2025 and the National Restaurant Awards Top 100 Restaurant.
The building itself is worth the visit; it is a 15th century stone-built inn with a mix of modern Nordic style with light wood furnishings and polished concrete.
After you’ve taken in the beauty of the building, you’ll be ready for the delicious food! Now, this is more than your standard Sunday roast; this is a culinary experience. They offer five courses of fine dining, starting with snacks created in the chef’s innovative style, including bread, fish, and Umami dishes. After your taste buds have had a sneak peek of what is to come, the showstopper arrives.
This is, of course, their delightful 50-day-aged Waterford Farm Côte de Boeuf. This comes with all the trimmings, including Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, and root vegetables. It stays true to tradition, but Wignall’s culinary mastery elevates the flavours for a truly memorable roast.
This is a Sunday lunch experience you must try at least once in your life. So, head down to Hetton and get yourself booked in at The Angel. You will find it located at Back Lane, Hetton, Skipton BD23 6LT.
3. The Hawthorn, Haworth
Our final stop in our tour of Yorkshire pubs takes us to Haworth in the heart of Brontë Country. The Hawthorn is housed in a stunning Georgian building that is full of history, character, and extraordinary food.
Downstairs, the pub has a relaxed, homely Georgian tavern atmosphere with a roaring log fire to keep you warm in those cold winter months. Upstairs has a more luxurious feel with high ceilings and Georgian windows overlooking the village’s famous main street. You will also find a fabulous collection of Barraclough clocks. These are a tribute to John Barraclough, the Clockmaker to the Brontë family and a previous resident of the building.
You can choose from the top side of beef, Swaledale lamb, or butternut squash served with garlic roasties, Yorkshire puddings, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, and gravy. You can also get additional sides including pigs in blankets, cauliflower cheese, and buttery peas. They also pride themselves on serving food using the freshest seasonal British produce. The meat for the roast is sourced directly from farms across Yorkshire and the Lake District.
It is a delicious, indulgent roast you will want to return to time and time again. Oh, and after you’ve had your lunch you can take a walk around this fascinating village, which is particularly picturesque in autumn. So, take a trip to The Hawthorn and experience one of the finest Sunday roasts in Yorkshire. You will find it located at 103-109 Main St, Haworth, Keighley BD22 8DP.
