Who doesn’t love a curry? For Brits across the country, it’s got to be one of the go-to dishes (after fish & chips, of course). Mild, spicy, fruity—whatever you’re into, every town and city has a local curry house to visit—if you’re like us, then a few times a month!
We’re a rogan josh household, loving a bit of spice with our meal. Give me a garlic naan for dipping, and I’m a very happy man. And after this news, all I fancy is a nice curry to enjoy. The British Indian Good Food Guide has named its top 20 Indian restaurants in the UK, and three are in good ol’ Yorkshire.
The list is curated using public nominations, which are then judged over 12 months by anonymous reviewers travelling around the UK to decide the best of the best. The winner this year is Raval Indian Brasserie & Bar in Gateshead, Newcastle, with two London venues in second and third.
The first Yorkshire Indian restaurant on the list is Tharavadu in Leeds city centre. It’s described as a gem for “Keralan cuisine lovers,” which we can attest to, having visited earlier this year! It specialises in southern Indian dishes and even has its own beer brewed in collaboration with Kirkstall Brewery. You won’t find your typical curries here, but you will get to try dishes like their chicken dosa.
Coming in at 15 and 16 on the list are Urban Choola in Sheffield and Mumtaz in Bradford. Urban Choola was praised for its modern take on Indian classics, and Mumtaz was described as a beloved institution, famous for its hearty, authentic Punjabi cuisine.
