Two Yorkshire chippies have been named in The Times‘ list of the 25 best spots for seaside fish and chips. We’d certainly have a few more to add if given the chance, as the Yorkshire Coast is home to countless phenomenal fish and chip shops. With stunning views on offer, there’s no better place than beside the North Sea to enjoy a chippy tea.
Introducing the list, the newspaper notes how these establishments have stood the test of time, with some of our favourite chippies going back three or four generations. One thing we wholeheartedly agree on is that fish and chips always taste better by the coast, whether it’s the sea spray, the sound of the waves, or the imminent danger of a low-flying seagull.

First up is The Tunny Club in Scarborough, Britain’s oldest seaside town, coming in at 12th place. The chippy’s fish and chips are praised for their freshness and consistency by The Times‘ renowned travel writer Chris Haslam, who credits the quality to the food being cooked to order. The unique vibe is also a major plus, with a historic low ceiling and cool wooden benches adding charm to the experience. Its proximity to the sea means you can enjoy your fish supper with a view. A portion will set you back around £7.95.

Fish Cottage also made the list, a well-known favourite in these parts, particularly thanks to its fantastic fish tacos. The seafood restaurant and takeaway is often bustling with diners. The Times highlights their impressive range of dishes, from traditional cod and haddock to oysters, Whitby crab cocktail and the ever-popular fish tacos.

Their signature dish, ‘the fish experience,’ showcases the fresh catch of the day — which might include gurnard, bream or lobster — served with sauces and sides. And for those short on time or with a dog, which tends to be our situation, there’s even a takeaway hatch where a portion of fish & chips here typically starts at £18.
