Yorkshire icon Bettys has launched the first savoury version of its much-loved Fat Rascal, and it’s a cheesy little number named fittingly the Cheesy Rascal.
The new creation is available in Bettys cafés across Yorkshire, including York, Harrogate, and Ilkley and others, as the famous bakery extends the range of one of its most iconic treats.
The original Fat Rascal was introduced at Bettys more than 40 years ago in 1983 and is said to have been inspired by the Turf Cake – an old regional speciality that was a filling cake traditionally cooked by shepherds in a covered pan over a peat fire.

Over the years, Bettys’ craft bakers have added their own touches to the much-loved Fat Rascal, creating the version we know today. The bakery says it has become one of its most iconic and recognisable treats.
While there have been sweet variations of the Fat Rascal over the years, the Cheesy Rascal marks the first-ever savoury version. It proved an instant hit, selling out online and in branches during its first week after launching in mid-May.
The York Press reports, A Bettys spokesperson said: “Baked with Cheddar and Gruyère for a wonderfully bold, cheesy punch, sundried tomatoes, a hint of mustard, and a pinch of fragrant herbs add depth to its flavourful mischief, while olives and cashews form the charming little face that gives Bettys Rascals the character they are famous for.”
Bettys produces over 580,000 Rascals each week, which are sold across its five branches and online here.
