The Yorkshire coastline offers some of the best beaches in the world — never mind the UK. And yes, you’re right in thinking we might be a little biased. We love the dramatic cliffs that overlook some of Yorkshire’s finest beaches. And now, one seaside town has been highlighted in The Telegraph’s recently published list of the ‘five British seaside towns that haven’t been spoilt’.
Good ol’ Filey, with its miles of sandy beaches, has beaten the likes of Scarborough and Whitby to be named at the top of The Telegraph’s list. With its stunning town, beautiful beach and Filey Brigg, we’re happy to see it getting its moment in the spotlight. It has also won awards for its beaches on countless occasions.
Writing about Filey, The Telegraph said: “It’s hard to say anything unkind about Filey. She’s the sweet, sensible sister of brassy Scarborough, eight miles up the road… The town still trades on those natural attributes – salty sea air, pancake-flat sands, safe waters, bracing cliff-walks – that first attracted the Victorians when it changed from a fishing and farming village into a seaside resort.”
They point to ‘Quiet Garden, with its book-swap cabinet, and the navy-and-gold bandstand in the Crescent Gardens’has particular highlights and goes as far as to describe Filey as ‘absurdly nice’.
This year, Condé Nast Traveller also gave Filey a nod, with special attention given to Filey Brigg, the stretch of rocky land that juts out into the sea. It offers rock pools to explore, a sculpture trail along the beach and a series of colourful chalets dotted along the coastline that are available to rent.
Its beach really is another star of the show. Stretching from Filey Brigg all the way down towards Bempton, at low tide you can enjoy a vast stretch of sand with plenty of fun to be had. Back in 2021, Filey Beach was named the best in the world, according to a list compiled by TripAdvisor! We know, you’re probably thinking, “How could Yorkshire possibly rank ahead of lavish destinations such as the Maldives and Bali?”
