The much-loved BBC series Our Lives has been re-commissioned for its eighth season, continuing its tradition of celebrating the rich diversity of life across the United Kingdom. And a Yorkshire spot is getting a feature.
With episodes airing weekly on BBC One, the series will feature three films each from England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, offering an intimate look into the extraordinary lives of ordinary people. This year, a particular highlight is the inclusion of a Yorkshire stately home, showcasing a unique and ambitious restoration project.
One of the standout episodes focuses on Wentworth Woodhouse in South Yorkshire, once regarded as one of the grandest and most significant stately homes in England. Over time, the historic building began to fall into disrepair, but a dedicated preservation trust intervened to save it for the local community. Now, a team of skilled workers and volunteers is undertaking what is being hailed as the most challenging heritage restoration project of the generation.

Among the volunteers are colorful characters like “Brasso Dave” and “Classy Scrubber” Rosemary, who devote their free time to restoring the fortunes of this South Yorkshire jewel. The year 2024 is particularly significant as the £5 million restoration project will see the Camellia House blossom once again. Future plans include transforming part of the estate into a hotel and hosting a variety of events to attract the public, further cementing the home’s place in the community.
BBC Director of Nations, Rhodri Talfan Davies, emphasizes the series’ role in highlighting the extraordinary lives of people across the UK, stating, “Our Lives showcases the extraordinary lives of people from across the UK – their passions, their dreams, and their resilience.” BBC TV commissioner, Diana Hare, describes the series as “a rare jewel,” noting its value in celebrating and reflecting the amazing stories of people and communities across the UK.
Rob Pittam, Managing Director at Robin Hood Media, the production company behind the Wentworth Woodhouse episode, expressed his admiration for the volunteers, stating, “We’ve been captivated by the people carrying out the restoration of Wentworth Woodhouse. It’s much more than a tale of plucky amateurs restoring a few old rooms.“
The new season of Our Lives premieres on Friday, 16th August at 7.30 pm on BBC One, with eleven additional episodes available on BBC iPlayer the same day.
