We are still recovering from the England women’s team doing a fantastic job of bringing it home for the country with their 2-1 victory over Germany. Even more by the fact Yorkshire lass Beth Mead was named Euro 2022’s best player after winning the Golden Boot award for top scorer.
Hailing from Hinderwell, near Whitby in North Yorkshire, Mead manage to help take England to its first major trophy win since the England men’s team world cup victory back in 1966.
Mead beat out Germany’s Alexandra Popp, although both girls scored six goals in the tournament. She scored in four of England’s six games and Mead’s goals included a hat-trick against Norway.
The 27-year-old plays for Arsenal, in which she won the league title 2018-2019 and has scored 34 goals in 98 appearances.
Mead’s success is all the more remarkable after she was left out of the Team GB squad for the Tokyo Olympics a year ago.
Speaking to BBC Sport she said “I can’t believe it… Sometimes football puts you down, but bouncing back is the best way. I’m speechless, I can’t take it all in… I’m in shock.
“I’ve had a good cry with my mum and dad. I am so proud of this team, I love this team and I love this country!”
Mead was left out of the Team GB squad in the Tokyo Olympics a year ago, so the Golden Boot and Euros win must taste that much sweeter for the Yorkshire lass today.
Mead isn’t the only Yorkshire lioness who helped take the team to victory defender Millie Bright, 28, from Sheffield and full-back Rachel Daly, 30, from Harrogate were both part of England’s Euro 2022 effort.
