Yorkshire’s ‘Stonehenge’ Is One Of The Perfect Spots To Visit For The UK’s Winter Solstice

Christmas is finally here. A lot of people will be winding down from work and getting ready to celebrate the festive season that feels like it’s gone on for some time now. But, did you also know that this weekend marks the Winter Solstice – the shortest day of the year – which lands on Saturday 21st December.

Also known as the ‘hibernal solstice’, this year the sun will set at approximately 15:55, signifying the year’s shortest daylight hours and the longest night. For some it will be a warm feeling with knowledge that the days will slowly start getting longer as we work our way through winter into spring.

The Guardian named the magical spot in North Yorkshire as somewhere you might want to visit for the Winter Solstice – and we imagine it has something to do with it being known as Yorkshire’s answer to Stonehenge. Even though it is much more modern in comparison and much smaller.

Druid’s Temple, a unique folly nestled in serene woodland near the village of Ilton in Yorkshire, close to the charming town of Masham. Built in the late 18th century, the Druid’s Temple exudes mystery and historical intrigue. Styled after famous stone circles like Stonehenge, it was created to provide local farmers with employment during challenging economic times. William Danby, a former Sheriff of Yorkshire and owner of Swinton Park, commissioned the construction, offering labourers one shilling per day to complete the structure.

The site features impressive stones, some reaching up to 10 feet in height, arranged in a formation spanning 100 feet. At its centre is a stone altar with a cave-like tomb behind it.

The Druid’s Temple stands as a testament to Regency-era creativity and resilience, offering visitors a glimpse into a fascinating slice of Yorkshire’s history. This winter solstice, it’s an ideal spot to celebrate the season while surrounded by the tranquillity of nature.
