£2 Billion West Yorkshire Tram Network Serving Leeds & Bradford Takes Step Closer

Plans for a new tram system connecting Leeds and Bradford have taken a step forward. As the largest city in Western Europe without a mass transit system, it would be a welcome addition, if approved by the government.

Last year plans were announced for a huge new tram network in the city, and needs a whole load of money to make it a reality. Something, Tracy Brabin, mayor of West Yorkshire knows all too well. And the mayor has called on the government to approve £1bn in funding, Time Out reports. Once approved, the construction of the £2.5bn tram system will be able to start in 2028.

Previously Mayor Tracy Brabin said: “This will be transformational for the North, helping our communities to thrive and our economy to flourish – benefitting generations to come with greater opportunity and prosperity.”

She continued: “We know that mass transit systems have successfully helped to regenerate areas right across the country by boosting connectivity, opportunity and prosperity – and we will work tirelessly to make sure that happens here in West Yorkshire.”

Almost 5,000 individuals and organisations took part in a consultation with West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) back in February. Two-thirds were in favour of the proposed route for the tram. The to connect the city to Leeds city centre covering areas such as Thornbury, Laisterdyke, Pudsey, Armley and Wortley.

The Leeds line would prioritise key locations such as Leeds Generaly Infirmaty, the South Bank, Holbeck and Beeston. More than three-quarters of the participants supported a line from St James’s Hospital in the north of Leeds to the White Rose Shopping Centre in the south of the city.

The WYCA is using consultation feedback to help select the preferred options for the tram system.
