Flying Scotsman Has Returned To NYMR Offering ‘Once-In-A-Lifetime’ Rides

The iconic Yorkshire locomotive Flying Scotsman is scheduled for a series of special services in North Yorkshire this autumn. Arguably, the world’s most recognised steam locomotive that holds a number of speed and distance records, and also the first to achieve several of those.

The Flying Scotsman will be visiting the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in October and November, and railway enthusiasts and families can book the seats on this ‘once-in-a-lifetime experience’ return journey between Grosmont and Pickering, a popular and scenic part of the NYMR’s heritage line.

In partnership with the National Railway Museum and Northern Steam Operations Ltd, the event is part of the Railway 200 celebrations. You can pre-book seats for a return journey with departure times at 8.45am, 11.40am, or 3pm for approximately two hours and 35 minutes of immersive steam travel.

There’s also non-seat-allocated services between Pickering, Grosmont, and Whitby will be available pulled by other locomotives that are accessible with a valid Flying Scotsman ticket.

The iconic No. 60103 Flying Scotsman will be running on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) tracks from 25th–29th October and 1st–5th, 8th–12th November 2025. Passengers can enjoy a return journey from Grosmont to Pickering, with departures at 8:45am, 11:40am, and 3:00pm. Tickets start from £51, which includes a reserved seat for a 2-hour 35-minute experience. This is a rare opportunity to travel behind one of Britain’s most famous locomotives and follow the same scenic route taken by King Charles III in 2023. During your visit, you can also enjoy refreshments at the railway’s charming tea rooms and pick up exclusive souvenirs from the station shops.

Tickets start at £54.50 per person, and with the donation fare, NYMR can claim Gift Aid for every £1 donated to receive an extra 25p from the Treasury. The fund goes towards the ongoing preservation of the iconic heritage railway.

Visitors who choose to donate the dare will receive a £9 voucher to spend in the station shop and tearoom.

You can enjoy refreshments at Pickering, Goathland, and Grosmont stations, as well as onboard snacks and drinks. You can even pick up Flying Scotsman-themed souvenirs and memorabilia at the station shops.
