Plans to expand a popular brewery on the outskirts of York have officially been given the green light, paving the way for new jobs and increased production. The new space will offer a unique experience that’s described as a cross between a traditional German beer hall and an Alpine ski Chalet.
Pivovar has secured approval from City of York Council to expand its Elvington Brewery, where its Mittel pilsner and lager are produced. The development will include a two-storey extension featuring a new taproom, alongside a kitchen and outdoor seating area.
Council planning officers said the expansion could create up to 16 new jobs and confirmed the development would not cause undue harm to nearby residents, despite objections from two neighbouring households over potential noise from outdoor drinkers. Opening hours are planned from 11am to 10pm Sunday to Thursday, and until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

To address concerns, planning conditions have been put in place requiring the outdoor seating area to operate between 11am and 9pm daily. As part of the expansion, a new bottling line will also be installed to boost production capacity, helping the business meet growing demand, YorkMix reports.
Paul Hawksworth, director of Pivovar, previously told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that the expansion is key to taking the company’s beers beyond the North. Founded in 2003 as a beer importer, Pivovar has since grown into a major player in the industry, brewing its own Mittel range and operating 14 bars and restaurants across the UK, including four in York.
The director said: “We’ve grown and grown over the years and now we’re supplying 250 pubs, bars and restaurants around the North, from Whitley Bay to North Derbyshire. We’ve been developing our own lagers and we think we’ve cracked it with our flagship beer Mittel, but demand’s gone crazy.
“We’ve extended our existing brewery three times and we keep expanding, our fermenters are now outside because we don’t have any more space inside. So the time has come to expand in a big way, and this extension will allow us to quadruple our output. We’re currently open to the community by way of a small taproom, but now we need a proper taproom. It will have a cosy feel.”
