Yorkshire’s beaches are some of the best in the world. They range from quaint hidden gems to long sandy stretches of beach – all making our coastline a sought-after place to visit. Along with fantastic beaches, Yorkshire also has fantastic seaside towns where you can enjoy fish & chips and all the classic tropes of a visit to the coast.
The Blue Flag is an internationally recognised award that highlights the quality of beaches, including the way they are managed and the facilities offered to visitors. To meet the requirements, a beach must fulfill 30 strict criteria including water quality, environmental education, cleanliness, provision of litter bins and toilets, no dogs during the bathing season, lifeguards, and others.
And, this year, the four beaches that were awarded the Blue Flag were Hornsea, Withernsea, Scarborough North Bay, and Whitby. The awards aim to improve the quality of England’s coastlines and promote the country’s best beaches.

This is Hornsea’s third year in a row being named on the list with Withernsea being named for a second time.
Councillor for heritage and coastal Barbara Jefferson said: “It is fantastic news that Hornsea and Withernsea can fly Blue Flags this year and that three more of our beaches have been given Seaside Awards.
“They have all been recognised for meeting high standards and this shows that we have excellent beaches in the East Riding for residents and visitors to enjoy. This will no doubt help to attract extra tourists to our area this season.”
