We love a fish & chip supper in Yorkshire, and we aren’t ashamed to say that we have some of the best in the UK right on our doorstep. We aren’t the only ones who think so, as four of Yorkshire’s top fish & chips restaurants have been named among the best in the UK by The Times. All named in the list are located by the coast, as the best should be, and the list comes just in time for summer.
The best fish & chips is all about the batter. We love that golden and lightly crisp batter that surrounds the fish, letting you pick it up. Served with fish that has preferably been fried in beef dripping, accompanied by a classic dandelion & burdock. We are salivating just thinking about it now.

The Tunny Club, Scarborough, North Yorkshire
First on the list is The Tunny Club, coming in 7th place. We’ve not actually tried this one, but The Times’ Chris Haslam and Katie Bowman reckon this is the best chippy in Scarborough. They note that “the fish and chips are cooked to order here, which accounts for the fact they taste so fresh and consistently fabulous.”
They also highlight that “you can dine at wooden benches in the historic, low-ceilinged fish bar, outside on the patio, or take your fish supper down to the seafront under a minute’s walk away.” Fish supper from £7.95.
Whitehead’s Fish & Chips, Hornsea, East Riding of Yorkshire
Next is Whitehead’s in Hornsea, in 8th place. Now we have tried these bad boys and can highly recommend you try them for yourselves. Not found along the seafront, it’s “hidden away in a housing estate half a mile from the sands.” Whitehead’s is a local and regular visit to Hornsea’s favourite, and the place won the UK’s best chip shop at the 2023 National Fish & Chip Awards.
The Times comments that “the fish suppers are superb, and there’s treacle sponge for pudding.” Fish supper from £14.50.
Lighthouse Fisheries of Flamborough, East Riding of Yorkshire
A firm favourite of ours when visiting Flamborough Head to see the seals or after a visit to Bempton Cliffs to see the puffins. It’s a relative newbie on the fish & chips shop scene, as it’s only been open for three years, but has already won a range of awards including Best Newcomer at the 2023 National Fish & Chip Awards.
The Times highlights its “patio garden open to diners, its vegan appeal (try the saveloy), and its services to cold, hungry birdwatchers.” Fish supper from £9.30.
The Magpie Café, Whitby, North Yorkshire
From relative newcomer to old hand. Magpie Cafe is an icon of Whitby, and we know some people are already raging and saying Trenchers is better, but it doesn’t take away from the legacy this place has in Whitby, celebrating its platinum jubilee in 2009.
The Times said: “we sampled dishes from four other outlets in the town. It was all for nowt, though, because none came close to the quayside queen.” Fish supper from £16.95.
