Exciting news for Shrek fans! The beloved green ogre is set to return in the fifth installment of the franchise, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz reprising their iconic roles. This marks the first Shrek film in 16 years, and fans can’t wait to see Shrek and his faithful donkey back on the big screen.
DreamWorks Animation made the announcement via X, stating: “Not too Far, Far Away… Shrek 5 is coming to theatres on July 1, 2026, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz.”
For those of us who remember the original release in 2001, this news brings back a wave of nostalgia. The first film, which won the first Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film, introduced us to Shrek’s journey from a solitary bachelor to a family man. The subsequent films followed Shrek as he met the in-laws and started a family, each installment as strong as the original.

Speculation is rife about where Shrek’s life will be in this new film. Shrek 5 will be the seventh film in the broader franchise, which includes spin-offs like Antonio Banderas’ Puss in Boots and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. According to Eddie Murphy, Donkey is also set for his own spin-off movie.
In an interview with Collider, Murphy revealed that work on Shrek 5 began “months ago.” He said, “I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie.”
The film will be directed by Walt Dohrn, known for his work on the Trolls franchise and as a writer and artist on the second and third Shrek films. He also served as Head of Story on the fourth film. Gina Shay, also from the Trolls franchise, will produce alongside Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri (The Super Mario Bros. Movie), with Brad Ableson (Minions: The Rise of Gru) co-directing.
With such a talented team behind it, Shrek 5 is set to be a highly anticipated release, bringing joy to both old fans and new.
