James Norton, hailing from North Yorkshire, is undoubtedly one of the UK’s finest actors. From his gripping performance as Tommy Lee Royce in Happy Valley to his recent role in Playing Nice, which became ITVX’s biggest-ever launch, everything he touches seems to turn to gold. Now, the BBC has unveiled a first look at its upcoming historical drama King & Conqueror, set to premiere next month.
Anticipation is high for King & Conqueror. The eight-part series sees Norton play Harold, Earl of Wessex, opposite Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as William, Duke of Normandy. The drama explores the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066 – a turning point in British history.

Written by Michael Robert Johnson, the series is described as “a story of a clash that defined the future of a country – and a continent – for a thousand years, the roots of which stretch back decades and extend through two interconnected family dynasties, struggling for power across two countries and a raging sea.
“Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy were two men destined to meet at the Battle of Hastings in 1066; former allies with no initial designs on the British throne, ultimately forced by circumstance and personal obsession into a war for its crown.”
The first-look trailer introduces us to a whole host of characters, including King Edward, played by Eddie Marsan, Lady Emma, played by Juliet Stevenson, Morcar played by Elander Moore, Gytha played by Clare Holman, Tostig, played by Luther Ford, Queen Gunhild played by Bo Bragason, and Godwin played by Geoff Bell.
