Whitby’s iconic Whale Bone Arch is set to be replaced by a bronze replica as the clifftop structure is deteriorating. For those who don’t know, at the top of West Cliff in the seaside town, real jawbones of dead whales look out over the town and have become an iconic part of the town’s history.
The original was first raised in 1964 as a symbol of Whitby’s maritime heritage and replaced by another genuine pair in 2022, but instead of being replaced again, there will be a bronze replica made and it will be taken down in September to allow a replica of the same size to be moulded from the existing bones, according to the BBC.
Whitby’s mayor Sandra Turner said: “Nobody wants to think a whale has been killed in this day and age, but at the same time it’s Whitby’s heritage. It’s important we still have something up there which represents that.”
Mark Cranem, council executive member, said: “The new bronze arch will stand for generations, providing a lasting symbol of the town’s unique maritime heritage and ensuring this iconic feature continues to inspire residents and visitors long into the future.”
The bronze replica will cost an estimated £70,000 and was the most expensive option put forward by the council, which will cover its cost. And the new structure is said to be installed early next year.
