Autumn is here and that means leaves on the ground, the start of milder weather and the celebration of all the vibrant shades of red, orange, yellow, and brown. And, the historic city of York has been named the UK’s top destination for autumn weekend breaks.
According to a study by Premier Inn, The Express reports, the city is known for its cobbled streets, ancient architecture and of course its stunning York Minster. This time of year York transforms, with the leaves on the trees giving the city a warm, vibrant glow that you can’t get any other time of year.
Located in North Yorkshire, York is one of the most popular tourist cities in the country and is home to amazing gardens, tree lines River Ouse and Parliament Square which only enhance the autumn feel of the city making you want to city in the window of a nearby coffee shop and take in the beautiful autumnal colours.

York obviously has its roots in Roman times with the city walls being an example of the best intact Roman walls in the country at two miles of surviving masonry. It can’t be a trip to York with out a walk down the Shambles and a wander around the Shambles market either.
York is famous for its Christmas market which will take place next month, but we feel that beating the crowds and visiting in the autumn months gives you a chance to experience York at its best – the less crowded streets give you an opportunity to enjoy the unique architecture that the city has to offer.

Visit the Museum Gardens for a true experience of autumn colours. The perfectly curated garden offers up some great scenic walks through the city – especially in the autumn months where you can wrap up warm with scarf wrapped around your neck taking in the natural beauty of the place.
