Yorkshire is set to take over London as 100 Yorkshire folk storm the capital. That’s right, armed with white roses, postcards, and the region’s famous chip spice, volunteers are set to promote God’s Own Country, more specifically East Yorkshire and Hull, and its many attractions by doing what we do best: having a natter. That’s right, actually speaking to each other.
This Yorkshire Day (1st August), volunteers are spreading the word about how great the region is, as well as encouraging Londoners to enter a competition for a chance to win a short break to Hull, the Yorkshire Wolds, or the picturesque coast. This initiative is spearheaded by Hull Trains, in collaboration with Visit Hull and East Yorkshire (VHEY) and HEY Volunteering.
Travelling in comfort and style, the volunteers will depart from Hull on one of Hull Trains’ seven direct services to London, carrying 5,000 pots of the iconic chip spice, ready for their memorable Yorkshire Day adventure. “American” chip spice – found in almost every chippy in Hull and East Yorkshire – is a blend of paprika, tomato powder, onion and garlic –as well as originated in the city in the 1970s.
Their itinerary includes prominent locations across the capital, such as Camden and Regent’s Park.

Among the volunteers is Hull City Councillor Rob Pritchard, who oversees Leisure and Culture at the council. Pritchard emphasised the importance of this event, stating, “We know how special our region is, but not everyone knows about what Hull and East Yorkshire have to offer. This is a fantastic opportunity to spread the word about East Yorkshire to the people of London. We hope to inspire some of them to visit us and contribute to making Hull a world-class visitor destination.”
Martijn Gilbert, Managing Director of Hull Trains, expressed pride in the initiative. “As a company proudly based in Yorkshire, transporting record numbers of people to and from our region daily, we’re thrilled to showcase our support for Yorkshire Day. Partnering with local organisations, we’re taking this year’s celebration to new heights along our route, which includes Beverley, Hull, Selby, Doncaster, and London.”

Gilbert continued, “We’re particularly proud to celebrate all that makes our region special, from Hull’s rich maritime heritage to the unique charm of chip spice. By working with Visit Hull and East Yorkshire, we aim to encourage more people to travel to our wonderful region, ideally by Hull Trains!”
