Saltburn-by-the-Sea is one of those Yorkshire Coast gems that is overlooked by tourists sometimes for the likes of Whitby and Scarborough, but for those in the know, it’s an absolute hidden gem. The coastal town’s main attraction has to be the fantastic pier that stretches out proudly into the sea, surrounded by beautiful sandy beaches.
It adds that old-fashioned seaside charm along with the oldest water-powered funicular in Britain, the Saltburn Cliff Lift, which offers panoramic views of the coastline. Helping to make the underrated seaside town a more popular place, a £2 million investment aimed to revitalise infrastructure and enhance its appeal to tourists and locals alike is underway, according to Travel and Tour World.

Located near Middlesbrough, Saltburn was one of the many seaside resorts dating back to Victorian times that saw people flock to the nation’s beaches thanks to the arrival of the railways. Now the town offers up that Victorian charm with its stunning architecture, charming coastline with rugged cliffs and sandy beaches.
The £2 million regeneration project, funded by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, is set to rejuvenate Saltburn by focusing on improvements that enhance accessibility, modernise facilities, and preserve the town’s historic character.
These enhancements include the regeneration of the Upper and Lower Promenades. New street lighting, more seating and resurfaced footways have already been added to the Upper Promenades. And, the Lower Promenade has seen the restoration of the historic balustrade, the town’s most popular car park has been expanded with an overflow car park built, including electric vehicle (EV) charging points and facilities for motorhomes.

The Grade II-listed Albert Memorial has been meticulously restored, preserving an important piece of Saltburn’s heritage. Local footpaths have been improved, making it easier to explore the town’s scenic surroundings.
Councillor Carrie Richardson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate and Culture at Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, has said: “Saltburn is one of our most popular and much-loved beauty spots, and visitor numbers continue to grow year on year. Such popularity has created an increased demand for visitor infrastructure, particularly during the peak tourist season, and we want to enhance the visitor experience.”
