Huge Colony Of Grey Seals That Chill At Flamborough

The East Yorkshire Coast can sometimes be a forgotten gem away from the beaches and seaside towns. Visitors descend upon the coast in their thousands over summer to visit the beautiful beaches, but rarely seek out the rest of the idyllic coastline where there are some great opportunities to see wildlife at its best.

Visiting the beautiful Flamborough Head, you’ll stumbled upon a group of seals chilling out in a cove near the famous drinking dinosaur just down from Flamborough Lighthouse.

You can take snaps from a safe distance, the seals caught up on some sleep and relaxed on the beach. Watch them venture into the sea for a dip, whilst others potter along the beach in proper British seaside fashion.

How to view the seals at Flamborough Head, East Yorkshire safely

It’s great to see the family keep their distance and let the seals play. The Yorkshire Seal Organisation advice is to keep out of sight, quiet, and downwind.

They also advise you to keep well away and use binoculars or zoom on your phone (which the family did). Also, do not feed them, take selfies with them or fly drones near them.

Over the past few years the number of seals using Flamborough Head as a ‘haul out site’ has increased, according to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. They say that this doesn’t mean that the population has increased locally, but that individuals may have moved to Flamborough from other areas of the coast.

Flamborough Head is a well known tourist spot for catching a glimpse of puffins and other birds especially in the spring months when they arrive to mate. But, catching a glimpse of seals at the beautiful drinking dinosaur spot whistl looking out to the North Sea is becoming a more common occurance as well.
