Fans of the hit Channel 5 series All Creatures Great and Small were glued to the tele last night as the show returned for a fifth series. And what an emotional rollercoaster it was. Be aware that this article may contain spoilers for those who haven’t seen the first episode.
The story continues in Darrowby, set in the Yorkshire Dales during the spring of 1941. As World War II rages on, James Herriot (played by Nicholas Ralph) is stationed at RAF Abingdon, while his wife Helen (Rachel Shenton) adjusts to motherhood with their baby, Jimmy. The Skeldale House family, including Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West) and Mrs Hall (Anna Madeley), are navigating life with the war effort in full swing.
Last night’s had viewers emotional as James Herriot fell ill and was deemed unfit to continue in the war effort. He was sent back to help out on the farm, and we received a heartwarming All Creatures moment of him delivering a calf.
Herriot missed out on an active mission to Scotland where he faced the heartbreaking news that the pilot that had replaced James died after coming under fire from the Germans along with two others. James broke down as he received news of the incident when his officer said: “They were halfway back when three German planes came out of nowhere. Our boys were shot down over the North Sea. The pilot didn’t stand a chance.”
James was faced with the harsh realities of war and the realisation he would have died had he not fallen ill. Herriot held back tears as he received the reply “Out of the question, I am afraid,” when asked if the dead would be brought back.
Fans of the show were left in tears from the emotional return to Skeldale farm and the end of Herriot’s war effort as he is discharged from duty due to medical issues meaning he’d be returning to Skeldale House.
We are glad to see our favourite Channel 5 show on the air and can’t wait for the next instalment of the hit show at 9pm next Thursday on Channel 5 and catch up on My5.
