Fish & Chips Now a Luxury Item Amid Soaring Potato Prices

We all love a fish & chips Friday, but are people willing to pay higher prices as they become more expensive? Yorkshire is home to plenty of chippies and I can firmly say it’s still one of my favourite takeaways.

The BBC reports that bags of potatoes are at their highest price point in nearly 50 years, with some lines up by 22% due to wet weather affecting crops. The national dish has been a staple for over 160 years, so much so, that during both WWI and WWII, supplies were protected.

But don’t despair, as it looks like things might be on the up for chippies. Speaking to the BBC, Dom Horabin, owner of the Seniors fish & chip chain around Blackpool, said that the price of potatoes is now coming down because the new crop is coming in and energy prices are dipping.

He said, “I can’t see the prices going back to where they were, but I can see people getting more for their money.”

It seems people are more willing to pay more for certain food products. Let’s just hope that the humble fish & chip shops across the country can weather the storm and come out the other side. The best way for them to do that is for us all to support our locals. The old phrase, ‘use it or lose it,’ comes to mind.

We recently visited a fish & chip shop with the most beautiful views of the coast. Found in Robin Hood’s Bay, Fish Box overlooks the bay and has a fantastic seating area, so you can take in the views whilst enjoying your treat. You’ll need it after taking on the hill that leads into the North York Moors fishing village.
