A new popular Thai restaurant is planning on making the ex-spot to York’s longest running shop, Banks Musicroom on Lendal its new home. Giggling Squid restaurant chain has sat out plans to move into the unit in York city centre.
The former music shop looks like it may be set to take on a new use within the ever changing tapestry that is the city of York. The former music shop Banks closed after 267 years, and was said to be the oldest shop in Britain.

The Giggling Squid restaurant chain set to make its new home in York says it’s an ‘easygoing destination specializsing in Thai small plate staples, with an emphasis on seafood’. intends to launch six to eight sights this year with 12 new sites in its sight for 2025, according to the Foodservice Equipment Journal. First launching 20 years ago they have close to 50 sites opening across the UK.
Agnelo Pereira, the group’s executive chef, told FEJ: “We are excited to continue our ambitious expansion plans, with Giggling Squid Cardiff Bay due to open shortly in March, followed by another six to eight later in the year and potentially up to 12 new sites in 2025.”

The planning documents for the new venue say: “A new shopfront is proposed to the front elevation of the building. The existing shopfront arrangement has been in place for at least the last 60 years.
However the arrangement is set up for retail display with large plate glass windows down to the ground and a very deep signage fascia. It is at odds with the current conservation area thinking where shopfronts are preferred to be of a proportion which complements the host building. Therefore a new joinery shopfront is proposed.”
