For the first time in its history, Helmsley Open Air Swimming Pool is set to open in November. Wild Swimming is becoming more and more popular with folks clicking on the benefits of cold water to the body and the folks at Helmsley have noticed that the pool proving popular even in the colder autumn months.
The pool, which is heated through the summer season, switched off the pool’s heat pump back in September, and it would usually close at the end of the Summer Holidays. But, in recent years it has been opening on weekends unheated. And, the col pool had grown and grown in popularity running for six weeks back in 2022.
And this year, 2024, it’s said to run for eight weeks which means for the first time in its history there will be swim sessions in November. The open-air pool offers fantastic views of the North York Moors, mix that in with the fantastic cold water benefits and you can see why enthusiasts are visiting in the colder months.

The pool is in its 56-year and seemingly more popular than ever with the popularity of lidos and outdoor swimming seeming to increase each year. It’s one of only 100 public outdoor swimming pools still in use in the country and was in danger of closing back in 2013 – so this is such a positive thing to report.
Temperatures in the pool have dropped to around 13C according to The Scarborough News says more than 100 swimming enjoyed the three weekend sessions held in September with pool temperatures in the high teens and early twenties.
Investment in a single automated pool cover has helped retain the pool’s heat with temps dropping around two degrees a week.
There are some cool pool sessions available this weekend 4pm on Friday to two sessions on Saturday at 10am and 11:30am. And then one more in November 2nd on Saturday at 11am.
