Red Squirrels Could Return To The Yorkshire Dales In A New 3,000-Acre Landscape Restoration

A new rewilding project in the Yorkshire Dales will see new habitats for creatures like red squirrels, curlews and black grouse be created in a new 3,000-acre project. The project aims to create new forests and restore peatlands in a bid to create the right atmosphere for wildlife to flourish.

The Independent reports that the new project will take place from the River Ribble up towards the Ingleborough mountain summit. It aims to connect existing nature reserves to create a more cohesive habitat for wildlife.

A statement by The WWF, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Natural England read:

“Over the next 12 months, the project will create around 40 hectares of new native woodland, with half created by planting 30,000 trees and the other half through natural regeneration,” the organisations said in a statement.

The chief executive at WWF, Tanya Steele, said: “Climate change and nature loss are two sides of the same coin – it’s vital that any efforts to safeguard our future and stabilise our climate have nature at their heart.

“The UK, as hosts of Cop26, can lead efforts to boost nature’s recovery, including transforming the way we use our land – with Wild Ingleborough a blueprint for restoration.

“Through this project, we want to show that a wilder world is a more stable one, with nature more resilient and able to adapt to change. Together with our partners and the local community, we hope to create a rich, diverse landscape for people and wildlife to thrive.”

“By intervening carefully, we will see the landscape of the Dales transform. Restoring natural processes and communities of plants and animals will help to secure and enrich the future of Yorkshire’s residents and visitors too.”

Back in January, a member of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, Ian McPherson, wrote about the reintroduction of species that had become extinct in the area being reintegrated in a ‘rewilding’ project. He discussed animals such as golden and white-tailed eagles, chough, beavers, pine marten, crane, and silver-studded blue butterflies being re-introduced into the Yorkshire Dales is attainable right now.

A member of Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, Ian McPherson, wrote about the topic this week, discussing the reintroduction of species that have been extinct in the area for centuries.
