Immersive Light & Sound Show At York Minster Marks 40th Anniversary Of Devastating Fire

You can experience York Minster like never before with a new immersive light & sound experience. Experience the cathedral rising from the ashes in the aptly named, Phoenix, a new installation to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the devastating fire that destroyed the Minster roof back in 1984.

The historic city commemorates the bravery, resilience and determination of those who helped save and rebuild the world’s most magnificent cathedral in a fitting display. Visitors will experience lightning striking the cathedral, lead pouring down from the roof and the iconic Rose Window cracking.

Created by award-winning artists Ross Ashton and Karen Monid, the new project uses light and sound to create Phoenix, a bespoke show that is set to bring the cathedral’s unique architecture and history to life. The pair created Northern Lights (2019) and Platinum and Light (2022) which tens of thousands of people visited.

The event helps raise funds for the continued restoration of one of the world’s most loved cathedrals. The Minster has stood at the heart of the city since 627AD and is an example of human ingenuity. So it is fitting that Phoenix celebrates this using the latest in projection mapping technology to tell a story.

The event started on the 19th of October and is set to run until the 2nd of November from 7pm Monday to Saturday and 6pm on Sunday nights. Slots are available every 20 minutes until 9pm with doors closing at 9:30pm and until 8pm on Sundays.

The projection is shown on a continuous loop throughout the evening and visitors can stay as long as they would like and are invited to move to the Nave and experience the installation from different angles.

Tickets cost £7.50 each, or £25 for a family ticket for up to two adults and two children (aged 16 and under). Tickets are available via the website here, or by calling 01904 557200.
