If there’s one dish we take extremely seriously here in the North, it’s the Sunday roast. Dating all the way back to the 1400s, the weekly tradition has been a Yorkshire staple for centuries now – and it’s something we’re both proud of, and particular about. Which is why we didn’t take the task of curating the best Sunday roasts in Yorkshire lightly.
From hidden gem restaurants tucked above quaint bakeries, to former stables that tell the tales of the Yorkshire Dales past – we’ve rounded up the best places to enjoy a Sunday roast in Yorkshire. Our criteria? Tried and tested by us, we’re talking top-tier gravy, crispy roasties, succulent roast beef and huge Yorkshire puddings.
1. Hearth, Hull

A hidden gem restaurant tucked above a bustling bakery – Hearth is a must-visit for any foodie. Michelin Guide and The Yorkshireman recommended, the team at Hearth create each and every dish over their custom hearth, resulting in incredible, deep flavours.
To start, guests are treated to bread from the bakery downstairs, which is positioned right on the cobbles of Hull’s Old Town. The Sunday roast is packed full of surprises, too, from the rich gravy that coats everything on the plate, to the flavourful crispy chicken skin, the crisp cheese on the cauliflower cheese and the extra goodies on both the beef and chicken roasts (buttermilk chicken on a roast? Actually works!).
It’s an extra special roast complete with all the trimmings, cooked and flavoured so well you won’t know what to eat off your plate next. Hull’s food scene is not to be rifled with.

2. The White Swan, Ampleforth
The White Swan in Ampleforth is a cosy, classic pub sitting on the edge of the North York Moors – a charming spot where the local community and families gather over great food and conversation. Run at the helm of a Michelin-trained chef, The White Swan offers a homely roast with an upmarket flair – topped with the most impressive Yorkshire puddings.
The rest of the roast is impressive, too, with the most moreish, rich gravy, some of the most perfect crispy roast potatoes we’ve ever tried, and seriously delicious veggies cooked in beef fat for maximum flavour. Nothing on the plate has been half-assed or neglected here, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a proper stunning roast in the countryside.
The White Swan, East End, Ampleforth, YO62 4DA.
3. The Saddle Room, Coverham

A former stable in the horse riding capital of the Yorkshire Dales, The Saddle Room is a stunning spot for all the family – serving up one of the best Sunday roasts in not just the Dales, but the whole of Yorkshire.
Warming, inviting and the perfect venue all year round, guests are given a proper Sunday experience when dining here – with meat carved tableside from the trolley and accompaniments such as roast potatoes and seasonal vegetables served family-style to share between your party.
Nothing escapes the kitchen here without bags of flavour – from the perfectly seasoned carrots and even the choice of cheese for the cauliflower cheese. Everything is sourced locally, with maps turned into placemats so you can see just how low the restaurant’s food miles really are. A true hidden gem.
The Saddle Room, Tupgill Park Stables, Coverham, Leyburn, DL8 4TJ.
4. Ox Club, Leeds

In our opinion, the best Sunday roast available in Leeds, the Ox Club is well-loved for its fire-grilled meat dishes, a technique that perfectly lends its hand to the Sunday roast – particularly the roast rump cap of beef, which is a Sunday staple here.
It’s the epitome of a ‘posh roast’, with roasties swapped out for the most divine pomme anna and gravy carefully crafted to suit the specific meat dish you’ve ordered (no one-size-fits-all Bisto here). Served family-style, guests can expect a true feast – with mixed seasonal veggies such as carrots and cabbage, creamy cauliflower cheese with a rich, crispy finish, and, of course, the main event: herb-crusted beef, the true shining star of the Ox Club’s offering.
Ox Club, 19a The Headrow, Leeds, LS1 6PU.
5. The Hawthorn, Haworth

Previously named the best Sunday roast in the UK by Rate Good Roasts, The Hawthorn certainly does offer something special. A stunning Georgian restaurant packed full of original features that showcase the true charm of Haworth, The Hawthorn specialises in seasonal British dishes – with their roast, in particular, taking centre stage.
One of the most special, rich, flavourful and decadent we’ve ever had here at The Yorkshireman, guests can expect the richest gravy, which takes around three days to infuse with maximum flavour – dry-aged beef, garlic potatoes, buttery veggies and much more.
It’s a real feast of a meal, best enjoyed with The Hawthorn’s beautifully crafted cocktails while looking out over bustling Main Street.
The Hawthorn, 103-109 Main St, Haworth, Keighley, BD22 8DP.
6. Dewars, Malton

Dewars opened just a couple of years ago, and when they launched their Sunday roast soon after, they weren’t messing around. The team were adamant they’d be offering one of the region’s best Sunday roasts, and it’s safe to say they succeeded in that endeavour.
The stunning feast begins with a choice of slow-cooked Yorkshire sirloin, roast pork or chicken supreme, with elevated yet homely trimmings such as duck fat and rosemary potatoes, creamy mash, buttery greens and spiced red cabbage. An absolute show-stopper of a line-up.
The flavours are irresistible, served in proper Yorkshire portions that had us bursting at the seams, with proper big fat Yorkshire puds. A truly memorable Sunday roast served within the stunning backdrop of the stylish restaurant and bright, airy orangery.
Dewars, Main St, Kirby Misperton, Malton, YO17 6UX.
7. Three’s a Crowd, Harrogate

A bright, yet cosy neighbourhood bistro in Harrogate, Three’s A Crowd is one of our favourite laid-back restaurants all year round – mostly thanks to their incredible Sunday roast (but also because the team are incredibly friendly, our pooch can come, too, and the wine is goooood).
There’s a great variety of roasts on offer here, from our favourite – the porchetta – to Yorkshire Moors lamb, roast beef and classic chicken. The base of stewed peas with smoked panchetta is the underdog of this dish, with golden syrup carrots, garlic potatoes and red wine gravy adding bags of flavour. Of course, a huge Yorkshire pudding tops it all off, resulting in what we can only describe as the perfect Sunday roast.
Three’s A Crowd, 11 W Park, Harrogate, HG1 1BL.
8. The Angel at Hetton

The crown jewel of Sunday roasts in Yorkshire, The Angel at Hetton offers a roast with a difference – pairing the classic dish with Michael Wignall’s acclaimed tasting menu.
The experience starts with an array of perfectly crafted snacks that offer a taste of the team’s Michelin Star tasting menus, alongside The Angel’s signature milk bread (which I dream about often), and a fish course – all before the main event of côte de boeuf. Now, of course, the côte de boeuf is the exciting part, but each and every side glitters on its own. From the Lancashire butter pie and the creamy cauliflower cheese, to the Yorkshire puddings packed with a surprise of their own – there’s a lot to look forward to during this Sunday experience.
The Angel at Hetton, Back Ln, Hetton, Skipton, BD23 6LT.
