Two Yorkshire Restaurant Have Been Shortlisted For Best New Restaurant For 2024 Awards

The Christmas tree and decorations are away – and we are well into our New Year’s resolutions (whether we are sticking to them, is another question). Two of Yorkshire’s best new restaurants have been nominated for best newcomer for the Good Food Guide awards for 2024.

Myse, North Yorkshire

Set within a former pub, the newly renovated 19th-century inn, Myse, located in the Howardian hills in North Yorkshire in the idyllic village of Hovingham is a stunning spot that offers up an unbeatable seasonal tasting menu. It, along with the other restaurants named in the category, are ‘pushing Modern British dining forward’, according to the guide.

The Chef and Sommelier team, Joshua and Victoria Overington, strive to showcase the surrounding area and extraordinary landscape of North Yorkshire through their tasting menu. Served with a Northern generosity, their menu draws on the region’s rich history for an elegant twist on Yorkshire traditional cooking.

‘Time and Place’ shape the menus, so guests will be served the very best produce that can be sourced on each individual day and time. On our visit we enjoyed the unique offering and flavours, which were made up of ingredients foraged, farmed, fished and grown locally.

The menu takes inspiration from North Yorkshire with each dish as showstopping as the next, we were introduced to new flavours, combos and texture that made for one of the most memorable meals of our 2023 visits.

The wine list, curated by Keeling Andrew & Co, the wine importers from the team behind Noble Rot, working closely with Victoria is an extensive list of wines that respect the land from which they’re grown.

In addition to the Non-alcoholic Pairing, they offer both a Wine Pairing and Prestige Pairing, each thoughtfully curated to complement the menu. These can be pre-ordered at the time of booking or when dining.

The Abbey Inn, North Yorkshire

The Abbey Inn, Byland, a stunning gastropub overlooking the beautiful Byland Abbey – which just so happens to be at the helm of Michelin-starred chef, Tommy Banks. You may know Banks already from York‘s Michelin-star restaurant, Roots, or famous sister site, The Black Swan at Oldstead – both of which sit under his successful helm still today.

The Abbey Inn Byland marks one of 15 new restaurants added to the Michelin guide, and the only one in Yorkshire to be recognised since May 2023. It was recently named best roast by Rate Good Roasts, who travel the length and breadth of the country to hunt out the best roasts this little island has to offer.

The country pub opened its doors in the spring of this year, and has become a must-visit over the past few months for Yorkshire foodies. Even Dave Myers and James Martin are fans.

The cosy pub offers unique views of the abbey situated just metres away, and serves up relaxed, yet beautifully presented dishes such as their beloved Byland burger, Ploughman’s boards, steak, lamb rump and more.

What makes the place even more special is that selected dishes are actually made with beef reared on the Banks family’s own nearby farm, which sits just a mile away from the restaurant, alongside seasonal vegetables and produce grown in the inn’s garden.

Additionally, the inn is also home to abbey-view rooms, so guests can extend their stay and check out sister site The Black Swan at Oldstead.
