The seaside town of Whitby is one of Yorkshire’s most popular tourist spots, and with good reason. The backdrop to Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, the rugged town has become synonymous with gothica as a result, thanks to its moody nature and mysterious back streets – all of which transform into a cheery seaside resort the second the sun comes out.
Now, of course, the town is famed for some of its incredible fish and chip shops, but for this article, we’re asking them to step aside to put a spotlight on some of Whitby’s other restaurants, who, if you fancy breaking tradition, serve up some of the best food in town. Read on for our top picks.
1. Humble Pie ‘n’ Mash

There’s no better place to start than Humble Pie ‘n’ Mash. This Whitby restaurant sits in the heart of the seaside town, and its menu offers up hearty, affordable and (most of all) tasty pies made with locally sourced ingredients. The venue is like a blast from the past with its nostalgic 1940s decor, and the food is so warming that it’s honestly like a big hug from Nan.
Followed by a bit of jam roly poly and custard, you honestly couldn’t get any more nostalgic.
Humble Pie ‘N’ Mash, 163 Church Street, Whitby, YO22 4AS.
2. Ditto

An intimate, 20-seat restaurant serving stunning British cuisine, Ditto boasts gorgeous European bistro vibes, with beautifully presented dishes designed around fresh, local produce.
The restaurant is renowned as one of the very best in Whitby, particularly for foodies and special occasions; however, due to its small nature, we’d highly recommend pre-booking a table to guarantee your chance to experience this cosy, warming and friendly restaurant.
Ditto, 26 Skinner St, Whitby, YO21 3AJ.
3. Cosa Nostra

This Italian restaurant, situated in a Grade II listed building, is a favourite in Whitby. Spread over two floors, the quaint space offers a great night out for family and friends. It’s locally run and provides the perfect backdrop for an intimate and relaxed dining experience.
The space is beautiful, with period features such as large arched windows and mezzanine dining areas looming over the restaurant. A great spot for a carbonara.
Cosa Nostra, 161 Church St, Whitby, YO22 4AS.
4. Emma’s Diner

This place brings the wow factor the minute you walk through the door. Emma’s Diner is a time machine of a restaurant, transporting guests back to the 1950s with retro diner decor, a lively jukebox and plenty of American grub.
Expect indulgent milkshakes, incredible burgers, the best mac and cheese in town and so much more. The loaded fries are a real treat, too, but most of all, we loved the retro outfits, decor and music. A unique experience in beautiful Whitby.
Emma’s Diner, 36-37 Flowergate, Whitby, YO21 3BB.
5. The Marine

Overlooking Whitby’s harbourside, The Marine is a contemporary restaurant serving up excellent seafood, from oysters and caviar to the more accessible fish pies and classic fish and chips.
Their seafood platters are a sight to behold, with huge displays of lobster, Whitby crab, oysters, and so much more. A proper feast for proper seafood fans.
There’s a limited selection of dishes for those who don’t like seafood; however, things from the sea are kind of their speciality.
The Marine, 13 Marine Parade, Whitby, YO21 3PR.
6. White Horse & Griffin

The oldest coaching inn in Whitby remains today, serving up delicious bistro-style dishes in a charming pub-style restaurant. It’s loved by locals, with not only a photogenic exterior, but also warming interiors with low lighting, making it the perfect place for all occasions.
Think British dishes such as smoked haddock, fish pie and chicken supreme. Even Charles Dickens has visited here, so you can kick back and relax knowing you’re dining in a piece of Whitby history.
White Horse & Griffin, 87 Church St, Whitby, YO22 4BH.
7. Velveteen

A stunning French restaurant with romantic decor, Velveteen can be found on one of Whitby’s prettiest streets, Grape Lane, serving up everything from croissants to crème brulee, and everything in between.
It’s classic, charming, and home to some beautifully crafted dishes, such as moules frites, lobster thermidor, and much more, all served within a space that transports you from the historic streets of Whitby to bustling Paris.
Velveteen, 3a Grape Ln, Whitby, YO22 4BA.
8. The Vault

A cosy spot on the edge of town, just a small stone’s throw away from the chaos of Whitby, The Vault offers a modern retreat with gorgeous dishes, from Sunday roasts and classic pub style dishes, to more upmarket dishes in the evening – including seared Yorkshire duck breast, seafood linguine, steak and much, much more.
The menu is fish-heavy (because when in Whitby, right?), but there is a little bit of something for everyone.
The Vault, Silver St, Whitby, YO21 3AH.
9. The Moon and Sixpence

Another stunning restaurant found along the harbourside is The Moon and Sixpence, a stylish bar serving up casual dishes that pair perfectly with their gorgeous cocktails.
Nab a seat in the window to enjoy the best views out over the water, order a cocktail, and kick back with dishes such as burgers, tacos, fish and chips and more.
The Moon and Sixpence, 5-6 Marine Parade, Whitby, YO21 3PR.
