York Christmas Market Visitors Urged To Avoid Travelling By Car

The season of Christmas markets is almost upon us and the City of York Council is planning to urge people coming to the York Christmas Market to use the park-and-ride services, urging people to avoid travelling by car.

December 2023 saw the single-highest number of visitors to the York city centre of any month that year with 1.2m people visiting, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS). With that in mind, you can see why people are been asked to use park-and-ride services. We regularly use is and find that it’s reliable and a great way to avoid traffic in the city centre.

The York Christmas Market is set to take place from 14th November until 22nd December and is set to be another busy event for the historic city. Excited tourists will be ready to experience all the festive offerings that the North Yorkshire city has to offer.

And they’ve got a lot to offer with 75 alpine-style chalets and 10 food & drink vendors are set to line Parliament Street and St Sampson Square selling all sorts of treats and gifts.

Environmental sustainability and accessibility remain key priorities for the market. So, the request seems in line with the council’s vision for this year’s festivities.

Traders have been given ideas, ensuring a positive environmental and societal impact. These traders are dedicated to ethical practices, utilizing eco-friendly materials, and upholding fair standards. The market promotes a more responsible and conscious shopping experience that benefits everyone by supporting them.

Councillor Kate Ravilious, City of York Council’s executive member for transport, said: “Please use sustainable travel means where possible, as roads can get very congested at that time of year.”
