When we think of Christmas, we think of Santa, the birth of Jesus, getting together with family, eating till we burst, all the things that make us happy in the cold winter months. However, a darkness lurks, ready to spoil and bring mischief to the celebrations. You’ve guessed it, this is the Krampus!

The Krampus is a devilish figure from Alpine folklore who has fangs, wild eyes, a goat-like beard, horns, and towers above most humans. It is widely believed to originate from pagan winter solstice celebrations. Its name comes from the German word ‘Krampen’, meaning ‘claw’. It is said that the Krampus is the son of Hel, the ruler of the dead in Norse mythology.

His purpose is to punish and frighten naughty children in the run-up to Christmas. The story goes that on the 5th December (known as Krampusnacht or Krampus Night), he turns up in towns in the dead of night. He beats children with birch branches, throws them into sacks, and carries them away to his lair. Those children who have been well-behaved would get a present from St Nick.

On Saturday 14th November, the city will host its first-ever official Krampus Run. It is a celebration of this ancient European tradition in one of Yorkshire’s most beautiful and historic cities. It is already hugely popular in the Gothic Yorkshire town of Whitby (you can read about this here).

A procession of Krampusse will creep through the city’s medieval streets adorned in eerie, hellish costumes, rusted chains, birch branches, and heavy clanging bells. They will be warning mischief-makers to clean up their act before the Christmas festivities begin.

It is sure to be a spooktacular experience with the chance to enjoy this mythical spectacle, which mixes folklore and history, up close. You can see first-hand the stunning creativity and artistry of the handmade costumes that help bring these beasts to life.
