York’s Eerie Ghosts Trail With Nearly 60 Ghosts Is Returning This Month

York Museum Gardens sits in the centre of the historic city and is putting on a special, Halloween-themed trail with many creepy ghouls. From a Victorian Gentleman to a jilted bride, it’s a great way to spend time in the city centre – and it’s free. Even better, this year there is a spooky new event that can take place once darkness falls.

That’s right! You can stroll through the Museum Gardens and discover the unearthly monks, the noble knight, and even a few ghastly animals – 58 ethereal sculptures to life – all in beautiful settings. From 19th September, you can seek out these ghastly ghouls across the city’s most atmospheric outdoor spaces.

This year’s trail will feature 10 new wire-mesh ghosts, from a plague mask figure to a rider on a penny-farthing bicycle. You can find them lurking in the bushes, along York’s streets, on top of monuments and more. Created in collaboration with York-based Unconventional Design. The trail is free and open to all visitors.

York BID has launched a new evening event this year entitled Ghosts: The Untold History, running from the 5th November to the 9th inviting small groups to explore one of the city’s hidden locations, hearing untold stories of York’s ghosts in an immersive setting.

Designed for audiences aged 15 and older, the evening begins at 6:30pm and tickets for £5 plus a booking fee.

Check out our visit to the Ghosts in the Garden experience from last year below:

Carl Alsop, operations manager at York BID, said: “Ghosts in the Gardens has become one of the city’s most loved traditions, attracting thousands of people to York each year. This year, we’re taking it a step further with Ghosts: The Untold History – an exciting new evening event that gives audiences a chance to dive deeper into the stories behind the spirits. With 58 ghostly figures, including 10 brand-new sculptures, 2025 promises to be our most haunting year yet.”
