Yorkshire is full of great pubs to visit, from traditional inns to gastro pubs serving some of the best grub you’ve ever eaten. And, it seems we aren’t the only ones who think so with an iconic North York Moors pub named in the best restaurants with rooms in the UK.
Writing for Condé Nast Traveller, Tabitha Joyce was particularly taken with The Black Swan at Oldstead, which is a Michelin-starred pub full of old-style charm with its exposed beams, flagged floors, and open fire.
Run by chef Tommy Banks, they use food produced from their farm, garden, and local hedgerows. Preservation techniques, dishes with bold contrasts, plenty of depth, and very little waste are what customers can expect when visiting.

The pub was highlighted for its “Scandinavian-style” dining room, its lamb dish “paired with turnip and mint” and rooms with “copper bateau baths”.
Tabitha wrotet: “From the outside this place looks like a traditional countryside inn, but you’d be a bit confused if you walked in expecting to find a pint and a packet of scratchings. Inside there are Afghan rugs, worn leather benches and flagstone floors, as well as home-brewed rhubarb schnapps in glass jugs, a demijohn of lemon verbancello and shelves lined with jars of pickled spruce and fermented woodruff.”

Condé Nast Traveller described the food experience saying: “Starters could include a mouthful of smoked eel and apple, or an exploding dumpling of ox cheek and lovage. A crapaudine beetroot slow-cooked in beef fat is meaty in texture as well as flavour, and local lamb is paired with turnip and mint.”
About the stay they highlighted the “pretty rose-covered house where some of the nine bedrooms have antique oak four-posters and copper bateau baths.”
It’s been on our list of places to visit for some time – and after this review we are hoping to visit sooner rather than later. Get me in one of those copper baths with a nice pint of local ale!
