The Yorkshire Wolds has taken one step closer to becoming a National Landscape, formerly known as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Natural England has submitted a proposal to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
If approved, the area would be known as the Yorkshire Wolds National Landscape, covering all 463km² of the proposed designation. The inland area would include the Wolds’ northern and western slopes, the foothills south of Malton, and the High Wolds and their valleys. Meanwhile, the coastal area would run around Flamborough Head, from Reighton to Sewerby Rocks.
The proposal was submitted on 8 September 2026 and, if confirmed, would make the Yorkshire Wolds the first AONB to be designated in England in more than 30 years.
Paul Duncan, Deputy Director for Natural England in Yorkshire, said: “Submitting this proposal marks a hugely significant milestone, not just for the Yorkshire Wolds, but for landscape conservation across England. This has been years in the making, and reflects the passion and dedication of local communities, landowners and stakeholders who have helped shape these plans.
“The Yorkshire Wolds is a landscape of real distinction, and we believe it deserves the recognition, protection and investment that National Landscape status can bring.”
East Riding Council leader Anne Handley said: “This is a key milestone, and we’re delighted that Natural England is submitting it to the Secretary of State. The Yorkshire Wolds are a stunning area of natural landscapes that fully deserve national recognition.”
The Secretary of State will now review the evidence and decide whether to confirm, amend or refuse the order.
What would designation mean for the Yorkshire Wolds?
Designation would bring greater support for nature recovery, climate resilience, public health and wellbeing, as well as local tourism. Natural England would also deliver the area’s first coordinated management plan, helping to focus conservation efforts and unlock further funding.
