If you’re on the hunt for bold flavours and food cooked with love, Food For Cowboys can be found on Alfred Gelder Street, Hull. It is one of two locations in the city (the other believed to be the UK’s smallest taqueria), and is an absolute must for those who love food. With an emphasis on seasonal, fresh made food made with heart, these guys are at the top of their game.
When anyone asks about our favourite food spots, we always point to the East Yorkshire city of Hull and its exciting dining scene, and people are often surprised. But it’s home to some of our favourite places, and Cowboys is now firmly one of them. I’d happily go back just to be bathed in their consommé.

We tried the food at the taqueria last year, and it blew us away. So, we were very keen to visit when they announced they’d be taking over the spot neighbouring The White Hart pub, which is also fantastic for a tipple. It’s no accident that this stuff is belting. Their dishes are created using authentic Mexican techniques that have been carefully researched and adapted to work with local, seasonal produce.
Step inside and you’re met with a warm, inviting glow pouring through a large, old shopfront-style window, drawing you in from the street. The space blends mid-century furnishings with a relaxed, modern feel, while an open kitchen downstairs adds to the buzz as you watch the team at work. Head upstairs and the atmosphere shifts to something more intimate, with cosy corners and a laid-back vibe that makes it easy to settle in and stay a while.
The menu is packed with tacos, margaritas, and a range of Mexican-inspired small plates, but it’s the birria dishes that really steal the show for us. We’ll travel for miles to visit a place serving up juicy birria tacos. We are just lucky that this place is down the road from us. From rich, flavour-packed birria tacos to a dipped ox cheek sandwich that’s as indulgent as it sounds, these are the dishes that keep diners coming back time and time again.

The menu is a mix of tacos and small plates with a variety of fillings from soft shell crab, ox cheek, confit pork, and roast chicken to veggie and fish options such as courgette, banana blossom and coley loin. The dipped ox cheek sandwich was a stand-out for me, but the menu is so good you could visit and each time have something different, which is what you want from a neighbourhood spot like this.
Alongside the food, Cowboys also boasts a standout drinks offering, featuring hand-selected tequilas, natural wines, and a cocktail and mocktail menu centred around small-batch artisanal spirits from Mexico. I can vouch for the spicy marg, which I had to have two of as the first one went down the gullet before sharpish (always a good sign).
