Whitby’s ancients streets are becoming more and more popular as times goes on. And, it’s no surprise with its amazing pubs and restaurant offerings as well as being steeped in history. One such pup located next to the famous 199 steps in Whitby is wanting to create a new basement bar.
Located on 124 Church Street, The Duke of York, owned by the Stonegate Pub Company, has sumbitted plans to the license authority seeking permission to “licence the bar in the basement and to permit the sale of alcohol from that area”. Were it approved, the basement bar could serve alcohol from 10am to 10pm, seven days a week.
The application also states that the [remises’ permitted hours for selling alcohol and opening hours would remain unchanged.
One of the best pubs in Whitby, and found at the bottom of the 199 steps also, it offers panoramic views and lovely food including a popular Sunday roast. The Duke of York is a historic pub in Whitby that can be traced back to the doomsday book.

It was then an ale house and a pub for 150 years. Not only will you enjoy a pint at this little ale house, you’ll enjoy a piece of history with historic pictures, memorabilia of Whitby along with a great range of real ales.
The council’s website states that: “Any representations must be made no later than Tuesday, March 19, 2024, stating the grounds for representation.”
