The former Top Gear and The Grand Tour presenter James May has been spotted filming in the North Yorkshire seaside town of Whitby. May made up one-third of the iconic presenting team alongside Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond. Last month, the trio’s two-decade on-screen partnership came to an end with the final episode, One for the Road.
The show may be over for the trio, but that doesn’t mean they’ve retired. While Clarkson is busy with his Prime Video series Clarkson’s Farm, May, who grew up in Rotherham, has been working on his show James May and The Dull Men’s Club, which looks at stereotypically male hobbies and roles, over on Quest.

Posting to the Welcome to Whitby group, Facebook user Lisa Michelle Thompson wrote: “James May, Top Gear presenter, is filming on the big boat now in the harbour.” It’s unclear what May was doing in Whitby, but it seems a few people have spotted him over the weekend. Yorkshire Live reports that May was filming for a new series on Channel 5 called ‘The Great Explorers With James May’.
We’d recommend he takes a trip up the 199 steps to visit the art installation currently on display at Whitby Abbey, maybe popping to the brewery for a quick pint afterwards. Sounds like the perfect day out to us. Especially with a visit to the famous Magpie Cafe afterwards.
The new Quest show explores the world of the “Dull Men’s Club,” a popular modern-day phenomenon that grew from a Facebook group which currently has over 1.4 million members. It’s a page for those who enjoy a slower pace of life and simple pleasures, which sounds perfect for May.
The 61-year-old James May was always the more sensible of the Top Gear trio and is known for his humour and wit, alongside his more cautious personality, which earned him the nickname Captain Slow on Top Gear. While we wait to find out more about his visit to the Yorkshire Coast, you can look forward to his new series, which launches next month on Tuesday 5th November at 9 pm on Quest and will also be available to stream on Discovery+.
