Happy Valley’s James Norton is set to feature in the latest series of popular Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon. Filming for the third instalment of the series is underway, and it looks like they need another dose of Yorkshire in the fantasy world after Sean Bean‘s iconic role in the first series of the original as Ned Stark, whose presence and influence were felt throughout the rest of the iconic show.
Norton’s character, Ormund Hightower, the leader of the influential House Hightower, was seen in images handing over his sword to Matt Smith’s character Daemon Targaryen, according to Surrey Live. James is in the green and silver colours of his house in full costume.
Production for the new series began back in March, with predictions that the third series may premiere sometime in 2026. The series will have another eight episodes and will be highly anticipated after the end of the last series.
The series House of the Dragon tells the story of the downfall of House Targaryen, drawing from George R.R. Martin’s 2018 novel Fire and Blood, 200 years before the events depicted in Game of Thrones. We look forward to seeing Norton take on the role and are hoping for him to put on a gruff Yorkshire accent once more.
Yorkshire’s James Norton broke viewing records earlier this year, with his drama Playing Nice. The drama became ITVX’s biggest-ever launch, even beating the now iconic Mr Bates Vs The Post Office that starred Toby Jones as Alan Bates.

And is also back for another BBC drama King & Conqueror, starring alongside Game of Thrones legend Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who’ll be donning the chainmail once more. Norton is playing Harold, Earl of Wessex, alongside Nikolaj as William, Duke of Normandy, telling the story charting the lead-up to the two men meeting at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 in a new eight-part historical epic set to air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in 2025. The series is produced by The Development Partnership, Rabbit Track Pictures (owned by James Norton & Kitty Kaletsky), Shepherd Content, RVK Studios and CBS Studios, in association with the BBC.
The four-part baby-swap thriller ranked highest in terms of streaming hours for those binge-watching it in one day, nearly double that of other shows. Posting the ITVX news StudioCanal, the production company behind the series, gushed over James Norton’s latest offering.
